In the evenings at this time I would go to meet Loya and walk with her by the borders of the swamp, by tall avenues of reeds and the paths of buffalo, and often we would rest on the cool grass....We would talk in whispers and laugh with secret laughter while the sun went down, and when the mosquitoes came to plague us we would return to her house and cook our evening meal. Sometimes she would place a small spoonful of tea in a lotus bloom before it closed up for the night, and in the morning the tea she brewed at dawn's first light had an elusive flavour imparted by the flower...
